UPDATE 9/7/2023: Dio's surgery went well. He will return home today. Once he is healed he will be ready for adoption. We are so excited we could find a solution for this little boy. He will soon be running and playing like he was meant to be all along. Please send inquiries about adoption to his foster mom as the email address above.
UPDATE: Dio’s shunt is operable! He is have surgery Wednesday, September 6th. Stay tuned to our social media for updates and ways to help.
Dio is new in rescue. He is roughly 3 years old and weighs about 5 pounds. We believe he is a Maltese.
He was surrendered to the shelter in Norfolk. We were called in to help immediately because they knew something was wrong. We came quickly and had him at the vet within 24 hours. He was not feeling well, he wouldn't eat and seemed to have no interest in food...even canned chicken. After his vet appointment and interventions, he still was no better in 24 hours. He would not eat and was exhibiting signs of neurological distress and pain. We had him evaluated at the neurologist. The neurologist thought he may have a liver shunt and kept him for testing.
Sure enough Dio has a liver shunt. We do not know more right now. He needs further testing to determine the best course of action - surgery or medical management. Please stay tuned for updates.
