Johnny Cash arrived at our care from a shelter in Suffolk, Virginia. As a stray, his age was estimated to be around two years old. He is a yorkie mix, weighing approximately nine pounds. At first, Johnny Cash was fearful of men but, over time, he has developed a close bond with his foster dad and is now much more comfortable around men. Through fostering, Johnny Cash learned that the world is a safe place and people are kind. Fostering dogs like Johnny Cash allows them to show their true personalities and helps them find homes best suited to their needs. (Apply to foster HERE– yes, that is a shameless plug)
When Johnny Cash first came into our care, he was in poor condition. He was underweight, his coat was unkempt, and he suffered from a severe case of kennel cough. His anal glands were also infected due to the lack of grooming and care during his time as a stray. He was both stressed and in pain, showing signs he had been without a home for quite some time.
After arrival, Johnny Cash was evaluated by our veterinarian, treated for kennel cough, the his anal gland infection, and was then neutered. Once he had time to decompress and heal, his personality blossomed. He became energetic, enjoying running and playing in the yard, finding sticks to tease his foster siblings, and engaging in games of chase. Johnny Cash’s lively spirit shines through, and nothing seems to hold him back from enjoying life to the fullest.
Being part yorkie, Johnny Cash requires monthly grooming to maintain his coat and to keep his anal glands healthy. Regular appointments every four weeks have proven effective in preventing further infections. We are committed to ensuring Johnny Cash never experiences the discomfort of an anal gland infection again.
Johnny Cash is a happy, energetic young dog. He is current on all vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. His ideal home would offer a fenced yard, another playful dog, and someone who is home most of the day. Johnny likes to act as though he’s in charge and makes his needs known. While he may not be suited for a home with children, he has not been tested with children under ten years old. Johnny Cash is house trained, sleeps through the night, and has a good appetite. He would benefit from a manners class to boost confidence and improve leash skills, but with consistent training in a loving environment, he is sure to thrive. Johnny Cash is ready to find his forever home—apply now to adopt this sassy, fluffy love bug and enjoy a life full of fun and adventure with him.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: Upon arrival, Johnny Cash had a severe case of kennel cough that required aggressive treatment. Although his initial treatment was successful, he continued to experience coughing, prompting further veterinary evaluation. He was subsequently diagnosed with collapsing trachea (CT), a condition common in small breed dogs. CT can be managed with medication, including corticosteroids, anxiety medications, cough syrup, and homeopathic remedies, but careful monitoring is essential to prevent complications. In the event of an upper respiratory infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. With proper care and attention, CT is manageable, and dogs like Johnny Cash can enjoy active, fulfilling lives.
