Rhody is a senior Yorkie, approximately 13 years old and weighs about 11 pounds. He has the cutest crooked grin and he knows how to use it! He comes to us from a shelter in Charles County, Maryland.
Rhody was diagnosed by the shelter with a bladder infection and placed on antibiotics. Once he was in his foster home we noticed other symptoms indicative of a bladder stone. He was seen for a check up, urine screening with culture, x-rays, and vaccines. He checked out great. The lab results from his urine analysis did not show any crystals and a stone was likely ruled out after an x-ray was obtained.
The vet scheduled an ultrasound of the bladder just to be sure and a dental cleaning under anesthesia. After performing the ultrasound on his bladder it was discovered he has a small tumor in his bladder. While very small, it does make him feel like he has to urinate frequently. The mass is believed to be cancer but he has been started on medication to hopefully shrink the mass. The vet was very positive for a good prognosis and quality of life with medication. He is tolerating the drug and continues to live a full life. He does wear a belly band in the house to keep any urine accidents to a minimum. The vet stated she has had patients live for many years with this type of diagnosis. His medication cost is minimum at about $25-30 per month.
