Most of us prepare for different kinds of emergencies – car breakdowns, fires, electrical outages. But do
you have a plan for your pet in case of an emergency? Pet owners should have a plan in place to make
sure their pets are cared for when something unexpected happens.
We’ve compiled the following list of tips to help you plan for these times.
Designate an Emergency Contact
- Designate a person to help care for your pet. Make sure you speak with them to make certain
they are aware of your request and to verify they are willing to help in an emergency. - We’ve created a “Pet Emergency Card” you can print, fill out, and keep in your wallet should you
be unable to communicate during an emergency. - You should also give your pets pertinent information to your trusted emergency contact
Have A Food and Medication Supply
- Make sure you have enough food at home, as well as any medication your pet takes on a regular
basis. About a week’s worth is a good measurement. - Make sure medications are labeled and the directions for administering them to your pet are
clear.
Veterinarian Information
- Have your veterinarian’s information somewhere in plain sight in your home. Some vet offices
offer a magnet for your refrigerator. - You can also compile the information yourself and post it in plain sight
Evacuation
- Should you need to evacuate, your pet will too! You can plan ahead by researching lodging and
transportation allowing pets. - Make sure your pet has an ID tag on their collar, and is microchipped. Remember to register the
microchip as well. Evacuations are chaotic, and there is always a chance your pet could be
separated from you. If your pet has a tag and is microchipped you have a better chance of being
reunited. - Having a current photo of your pet is an extra precaution and can help with identification. A
photo of you and your pet proves ownership. Smile and take that selfie with your fur buddy! - A copy of your pets current vaccines may come in handy if you have to cross state lines. Your
veterinarian will be able to print you a copy.
Pet Emergency Kit
Pack a bag with emergency supplies for your pet, including:
- First aid kit (bandages, alcohol swabs, tweezers)
- Multiple days worth of food and medicine
- Water bottles
- Bowls
- Blanket
- Toy/ something that smells like home
Preparing for emergencies is one way to ease stress in stressful situations. Our pets cannot prepare for
themselves. It is up to us to keep them safe in all situations but especially when the unexpected occurs.
Fail to prepare; prepare to fail. Let’s not fail our pets! Make a plan today!
