Hypoallergenic Dogs – Fact or Fiction?

Let’s get straight to the point. The fact is, there no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic
dog. All dogs have allergens. These allergens come from the proteins in a dog’s saliva or urine. These
proteins transfer to their fur and skin as they clean themselves and then shed into the air. Therefore, low
shedding dogs seem hypoallergenic. Protein levels in a dogs’ saliva vary which can affect the allergic
response. Some dogs might have more proteins in their saliva than others, and some people may be
more susceptible to proteins than others, but there are no specific breeds whose dander is completely
hypoallergenic.
“The truth is, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs, dog breeds, or mixed-breeds, but there
are many dog breeds that are less allergenic for people with dog allergies. Dander, which is atached to
pet hair, is what causes most dog allergies in people, and these dog breeds have a non-shedding coat
that produces less dander.” – The American Kennel Club
Allergies to dogs are very common. According to the National Institute of Health, about 10-20%
of the U.S. population is allergic to dogs. But this doesn’t mean you can’t have one (or two)! Prescription
and over-the-counter medications can help, as well as frequently bathing the dog (please be mindful,
bathing a dog too often can be bad for their skin and fur). Dogs with tight curling fur/hair who shed less
tend to be the best choice for people with allergies. Additionally, you can develop a tolerance to these
allergens over time. Overall, the existence of hypoallergenic dogs is FICTION. Let us repeat—there is no
such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. But don’t fear – you can still live a happy healthy life with one in your
home. And, seemingly, the best medicine is over exposure to their kisses.
