The holidays can be stressful, and worrying about plans for your pet while you travel can make them
even more stressful. Here are some tips to consider when traveling with or boarding your pet during
this time.
Supplies
If you are boarding your pet, be sure to pack ample food and more than enough medication to last
longer than your intended stay to avoid any interruption due to a change in plans. Holiday travel can
be unpredictable. Make sure to include any instructions regarding feeding and medication
administration. You’ll want to pack your dogs collar, harness, leash, poop bags and any other
necessary items for walking and activities, including toys and chews. Pack your pup’s favorite toy,
dog bed, or even a piece of clothing you’ve worn with your scent. Familiar smells are always
comforting.
If your have a pet sitter, be sure to leave all food, treats, and medications in a conspicuous place
with written instructions.
Information
If you are utilizing a pet sitter, be sure to provide your vet’s information including the address. Make
your vet aware someone will be keeping you pet and give permission to allow treatment, if
necessary.
If you are boarding your pet, ask about their plan for medical emergencies and provide your vets
information. It could be helpful to provide the facility with a copy of your dog medical record.
Evaluating a Boarding Business
Evaluating a boarding facility can feel overwhelming. Online reviews are a great place to start.
Asking friends or family for a recommendation can also help you find the right place for you and
your pet to feel at ease being apart. Once you decide on a location, ask for a tour and even take your
pet for an overnight stay to try it out. When interviewing prospective boarding facilities, don’t forget
to ask about the daily schedule including mealtime and play time; size separation; and if there is an
attendant overnight. Be sure to ask about about drop off and pick up times as well as extending
your pets stay for interrupted holiday travel. Some facilities offer enrichment for your pet. You may
want to inquire about enrichment activities for your pet and associated costs.
It may seem like a lot of work in the beginning, but the goal is to make sure your pet is comfortable
and safe as well as give you peace of mind while you are traveling. After all, it’s a holiday for both of
you!
